Neveln Center
Project Description
The Ankeny Community School District undertook a $10.5 million renovation of the historic Neveln Building—originally built in 1919—to transform it into a modern central office facility. Once a vibrant hub of education, athletics, and community performance, the building now enters a new chapter while honoring its past.
Scope of Work
The remodel included comprehensive mechanical and electrical system upgrades, space reconfiguration for administrative use, restoration of the original three-story façade, integration of preserved materials such as brick and hardwood flooring, and infrastructure support for boardroom expansion and staff offices.
Challenge Faced
Renovation of a century-old structure brought unexpected challenges, including uncovering hidden structural elements and legacy utilities not reflected in as-built documentation. The design and construction team worked closely with the District to adapt solutions that respected the building’s historic fabric while meeting modern performance standards.
Project Outcome
The reimagined Neveln Building will provide a consolidated, centrally-located headquarters for the growing 13,000-student school district. The completed renovation preserves key historical features while delivering upgraded systems, efficient layouts, and significant cost savings—estimated at $5 million compared to new construction.
