Ames Community Preschool Center

Project Description  

This project included a retrofit of existing HVAC system serving Ames Community Preschool Center Building (formerly the Ames Community School District Wilson Bearshear School).  The existing facility was constructed in two phases in the 1970s and included primarily original mechanical equipment.  The retrofit serves approximately 15,000 square feet of building area.  To support the new HVAC system equipment, a new electrical service was also required for the building.  Additionally, general construction inside the building and site work outside the building to support the HVAC and electrical system work were included.   

Scope of Work  

RCE served as the Prime Consultant, providing mechanical and electrical engineering services, with Civil Engineering and Architectural sub-consultants providing services for associated work.   

Challenge Faced 

The existing HVAC system utilized an underfloor distribution system that was no longer suitable for use.  Additionally, the Owner needed to continue their childcare center operations in the building throughout the construction process.  Due to the need for new piping and ductwork distribution throughout the building, combined with limited mechanical system spaces, phasing of the project and system selection and design were critical to the success of a phased construction process with Owner occupancy.   

Project Outcome 

A four-pipe fan coil unit system was paired with a dedicated outdoor air handling unit with energy recovery, creating a system that has improved occupant comfort, indoor environmental quality, and energy efficiency.  Detailed coordination of ductwork and equipment was completed to allow for the successful installation of the new system components.  The new electrical service and distribution components not only improved operational capabilities of the facility, but also improved safety for building occupants.  The Owner is excited to have a building HVAC system that is capable of properly controlling building conditions and operating with predictable maintenance requirements.
