Memorial Union Student Lounge and Office Suite Remodel

Project Description

In 2024, Resource Consulting Engineers partnered with Iowa State University and Invision Architecture to help modernize key student and staff areas within the historic Memorial Union. Once home to a post office and hotel lobby desk, the Union’s main level had long served as a central campus hub. This renovation reimagined the space as a student lounge designed for collaboration, comfort, and community. The project also included the full remodel of the second and third-floor office suites, aligning them with current workplace needs.

Scope of Work

Resource provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design services for the renovation. The scope included new lighting and upgraded finishes in the student lounge, along with HVAC and electrical improvements throughout the second and third floors. The design emphasized both function and flexibility—enhancing air quality, comfort, and lighting performance—while preserving the architectural integrity of this landmark facility. All work was coordinated to ensure that the Memorial Union remained operational throughout construction.

Challenge Faced

The Memorial Union is a busy, high-profile building with daily student and staff traffic. Maintaining full operations during the renovation required careful planning, phased implementation, and clear communication between design, engineering, and construction teams. Balancing modernization with historical sensitivity also required a thoughtful approach to finish selections, utility routing, and system upgrades.

Project Outcome

The project transformed a dated, underutilized lobby into a vibrant student lounge that now fosters informal learning, social connection, and daily campus life. Upgraded office spaces on the second and third floors provide university staff with refreshed, functional, and energy-efficient workspaces. The renovation stands as a successful collaboration between Iowa State University and Resource—bringing new life to one of the most visible spaces on campus without disrupting its day-to-day use.
